S-Parameter Testing

Analog Testing

In high-speed digital systems, signal integrity (SI) issues become particularly critical as data rates increase. S-parameter (Scattering Parameter) testing, as a crucial method for analyzing the electrical performance of interconnect systems, has become a core part of high-speed design verification and simulation.

S-parameters describe the reflection and transmission characteristics of signals within a multi-port network. Commonly, S11 represents the reflection coefficient at a port, and S21 represents the transmission coefficient of a signal from Port 1 to Port 2. In high-speed interconnects, S-parameters can accurately characterize issues such as impedance discontinuities, insertion loss, return loss, and crosstalk.

In practical testing, a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) is the commonly used equipment. Strict calibration (such as SOLT or TRL) must be performed before testing to eliminate system errors and ensure the test points are close to the Device Under Test (DUT), minimizing lead effects.

After performing a Fourier transform on the frequency-domain results of S-parameters, they can be used for time-domain simulations (e.g., TDR/TDT) or serve as simulation models for system-level SI analysis (e.g., IBIS-AMI simulation). As SerDes rates increase to 56 Gbps or even 112 Gbps, industry demands for higher bandwidth and more accurate S-parameters are also rising.

In summary, S-parameters are not only an essential tool for RF systems but also play a key role in high-speed digital signal chains. They help engineers evaluate and optimize signal chain performance, enhancing system stability and reliability.
